The next day, Grandma is the first one that gets into the car, and she secretly brought the cat, Pitty Sing, with her. Grandma dressed well with a hat and dress, as she said if there is an accident people will know she was a "lady". The family begins the long car ride from Georgia to Florida. Grandma keeps telling stories to the kids and also says that kids nowadays are not as respectful as they used to be.
The family stops at the Tower, a restaurant owned by Red Sammy Butt, who was swindled by two men by letting them buy gasoline on credit. Red Sammy Butt and his wife complain about how deceitful and dishonest people are nowadays and Grandma reaches an agreement with them about how hard it is to find a good man. She also brings up the topic about Misfit and Red Sammy Butt, and his wife wishes that they will not be robbed.
The family continues their trip to Florida and Grandma suggests a visit to the plantation she visited when she was a young lady. She is very sure that the plantation is near by. The kids are so excited after Grandma's description of the plantation that they convince Bailey to take them to visit it. Grandma guides Bailey to a dirt road, which she believes leads to the plantation. Suddenly, Grandma realizes that the plantation she is thinking of is in Tennessee. She is so angry about her mistake and she jerks her feet horrifiedly. The cat, which runs out of the basket from the jerkiness, scares Bailey by jumping on his shoulder. Bailey loses control of the car, and an accident happens. Luckily nobody gets injured, but the car is broken. Grandma keeps her foolish mistake to herself.
Finally a car passes by the family. Grandma waves at the car and it stops. Three men come out all carrying guns. Grandma thinks one of them looks familiar, and she screams out loud while she suddenly realizes he is Misfit. The Misfit said that it would be better if she did not recognize him. Grandma keeps calling the Misfit a good man, who would not kill a lady, and complementing him, telling him that he is from good blood, in order to survive. Misfit acts nicely to Grandma and tells her he would not want to kill a lady. Bailey and John Welsey are killed in the woods by Misfit's buddy. Grandma is in great shock and begging Misfit to not kill a lady. She asks him if he prays and tells him that Jesus will help him if he prays, but Misfit doesn't think he needs help from Jesus. June and the children's mom are also killed. Grandma calls Misfit her own child and tries to touch him, but Misfit is scared by her and shots her three times in chest. Misfit kills even the lady, Grandma. Misfit tells his buddies, "She would've been a good woman if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life."
