The encounter with Misfit is not a surprise to the readers as there is foreshadow in the story that the Misfit is going to show up. At the beginning of the story, grandmom warns everyone in the family that the series killer, Misfit is roaming in Florida and it would be dangerous to go to Florida, but nobody listens to her. When the family stops at the restaurant, the Tower, grandmom mentions Misfit again to Red Sammy Butt. Flannery O' Connor leaves the image of Misfit in readers mind and repeatedly reminds the existence of Misfit. She implies family's encounter with Misfit in the story by letting the main character, Grandma, talks about him again and again.
The author also informs readers that there is going to be an accident happens. It says in the beginning, " In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady." This sentence stands out as the paragraph that the sentence belongs to is all about the description of Grandma's clothing. The word "accident" catches readers attention as it indirectly implies something may happen. It evokes readers curiosity of what will happen and foreshadows an accident is coming.
